You want to sell your stuff, right? You want to make money right?
The best way to get rid of your unwanted gently used stuff and make money is to host a garage sale. It is a win, win. You get to get rid off your unwanted stuff, you make money, someone else gets to find new treasures, you make room in your home, organization happens and you don’t have to go anywhere.
Where do I sign up.. I have a garage full of stuff I can sell. How do I run a successful money making garage sale?
1. Timing is everything.
You want to run your garage sale on the weekend to allow lots of visitors/customers access to your sale. Most people will have either Saturday or Sunday off to go to garage sales. Running a garage sale during the Spring and Summer is more profitable as once the sun is out the people will come.
Set your garage sale date according to your availability and ensure it doesn’t overlap any major events like Spring Break or long weekends when people will be out of town. If there is an event in town and you are on the “parade route” this may play in your favor by drawing in customers.
So now that you have set the date, now you need to set the time. Note, that no matter what time you set there will be people arriving early intending to grab the best deals. So set the time of your garage sale for the time that you think you will have everything set up and ready. This way you aren’t running around with your head spinning while people are searching through your items.
2. Advertise your garage sale, spread the word.
Once you have chosen your garage sale date spread the word. Tell your neighbors, tell your friends, publicize it on social media. The more customers, the more sales. You can list garage sales on local Craigslist platforms and Buy/Sell networks. Make signs and put them up around the neighborhood. When you advertise your garage sale ensure you make note of the date and the time. You want your customers to know the where, the when and the what time. You may also give them a glimpse of what is for sale by offering a peak or a listing of some of the items you have. Entice your buyer, draw them in.
3. Price all your sale items.
Save yourself the time and the head ache price and label all your items. If you don’t your customers will ask, and they will find the one item you forgot to price .. they will. Price your items out to the nearest dollar or quarter. This means easier change. Don’t price out that lamp at $19.98 and expect not to give change. Do yourself a favor and price it at $20
If you have a bunch of items you just want to get rid of put them all in a box and mark the box “contents $1 each” or “contents $2 each”. If you have a bunch of items you want to give away for free you can do the same just mark the box “FREE”.
4. Ensure you have change.
You can bet that your first customer will give you a $20 bill for an item that costs $0.25 so you will be giving $19.75 in change. Ensure that you have enough change for this instance and all the other change sales you will need to make through out the day. Also ensure that your change and your sale money is placed in a safe location. DO NOT leave the money box out and then leave to go answer questions.
5.Protect the rest of the house.
Whether you are having your garage sale in the front yard, the backyard, the garage or the driveway you will need to block off or close all other access to your home. Not that we don’t trust people, but people are curious and you will have the occasional person that inquires about not for sale items. So ensure the garage sale items is specifically laid out and marked. Lock and close off all other access to home and household areas.
6. Have fun, socialize, barter and sell.
Don’t be afraid to socialize and have fun. People will buy more in a fun environment. If you want to play music and offer coffee or snacks, more to draw the customers in. Also don’t be afraid to barter and take a little bit less for an item if it means a sale. Remember you are there to sell your stuff and make money. For example say you have 10 books and they are priced $12 in total and someone offers you $10 – take it, it means you just made $10 and you don’t have to store those books again. Have fun, socialize and sell, sell, sell.
What do you do with the leftover stuff?
You may end up with a few leftover odds and ends from your garage sale you could pack them away and store them till your next garage sale. You could donate your garage sale leftovers to a local Women’s House or local charity for those in need.
