Are you tired of covering up the food on your counter? Do you have fruit flies buzzing around?
Every year as the season transfers for summer into fall we are inundated with fruit flies. You don’t even need to have fruit on the counter to have fruit flies, some how they just appear.
No offence to the little bug but they drive me crazy and those sticky fly strips they drive me even more crazy. Who wants circular fly paper hanging from their roof?
Did you know you can rid your kitchen and your home of fruit flies with two simple ingredients and a jar? Yes, and you probably have the ingredients right now in your kitchen!
You will need a mason jar, a piece of paper, dish liquid and apple cider vinegar.
- Place 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar in the mason jar
- Add a few drops of dish liquid to the vinegar in the jar
- Create a cone funnel out of the paper and place in the top of the jar with the funnel pointing down into the jar but not touching the liquid
How it works!
The fruit flies will fly into the jar through the hole in the paper funnel as they are attracted to the smell of the apple cider vinegar. Given that the central hole in the paper funnel is the only way in the fruit flies get stuck and can’t get out. The dish liquid also creates a barrier in the jar fluid preventing the flies from escaping.
You will need to refresh your jar every couple of days with new fluids to help deter and catch new fruit flies.
This fruit fly catching solution is non-toxic!
In our house my son finds this natural fly catching solution quite cool and he inspects and refreshes the container for me. Given that you are using common kitchen ingredients the solution is non-toxic and even a child can do it. You can use any apple cider vinegar and any dish liquid, I have not found any success or failure in changing brands.
Simple and easy, flies be gone naturally. Have an amazing day everyone.
