To make a long story short I had NO idea what to get my husband for his birthday.
He hadn’t dropped any clues, nothing. All he asked for was a quiet family dinner at one of our favorite restaurants.
So after dinner we stopped in at my husbands favorite fishing and sportsman store and I gave him some money to buy his own gift. I didn’t want to give him a gift certificate, what if he didn’t spend it, that would be a waste of money. I had an idea of what he might like, but what if I bought the wrong brand or wrong colour. So I decided to give him money and shop with him so I could see what he choose and what he wanted.
It appears my money saving and frugal shopping has worn off on my husband. He wondered that store for 30 minutes with nothing but a $5 item to show for it. His comment “while I love everything in this store I can’t validate spending the expense on some of the things I want”. I told him to search for something he really wanted.
Well after 45 minutes in his favorite store he asked me to take a look at something….
I followed him back through the store we had just walked around four or five times to their discount department. Inside was a brand new boat with oars, floor boards, seats and more. My husband asked “what about this?”
To be honest my mouth dropped, my first response was why and I think I said no. I expected a whole list of other items to be on the checkout list not a boat. How was I going to take a boat home in my small vehicle?
Well the boat came home… The boat was a complete floor model kit and the only reason it was on discount was because it was the floor model and it was out of the box. The boat was marked down $200 off the original price and it was brand new it just didn’t come in a pretty cardboard box that you have to recycle once you get home.
So my husband used my gift money to him and some money he had been saving to buy this boat that will keep on giving.
The boat will provide for lots of Father and son bonding time. Our son is over the moon that we have a boat, he was totally surprised that this is what his Dad chose. Fall fishing trips are already being planned.
So after I got over my initial shock of gift choice I think I support the decision. My husband has been wanting a boat for a while but I could never figure out how to afford the item. I never thought to check the discount area of his favorite store and find a brand new boat at $200 off….
This gift will keep on giving in so many ways…
- Father, son bonding time
- Fresh fish (free food)
- Family boating trips
Frugal living and frugal thinking. My husband wondered that store for almost an hour not wanting to spend our hard earned money, but he made a good choice. He choose an item he wanted, an item that will give us so much more than just a few minutes or a few hours. He choose a gift that will keep on giving for years to come. I look forward to my sons fishing tales and my husbands smiles after a good day of boating.
Have an amazing day everyone.
